Sometimes in Saigon, finding precisely what you want can be challenging. Despite the variety of restaurants on offer and new establishments popping up around town, you might still find yourself staring at your screen, almost compulsively mulling over the same options. This particular problem is doubly tricky when you start to include dietary restrictions. Last year, I began a gluten-free journey and realised how challenging it can be to find a variety of food that simply doesn’t make me feel sick. Food that I can trust from restaurants that know what gluten is. Luckily, there is already a group of such places and today, I will walk you through the ‘who’ and ‘what’ of gluten-free food from Saigon Scene.
Gluten-Free Dining in Vietnam
Introduction
Vietnam offers a wide range of gluten-free dining options for individuals with celiac disease or gluten allergies. While it can be a bit challenging due to language barriers and different culinary traditions, with some preparation and awareness, you can enjoy delicious Vietnamese cuisine without compromising your dietary needs.

Avoid Street Food – Many street food vendors may not understand or cater to gluten-free requirements. Stick to restaurants where you can communicate your needs clearly.
Nicer Restaurants – Higher-end Vietnamese restaurants, especially those in tourist areas, are more likely to accommodate gluten-free requests. Ensure clear communication about your dietary restrictions.
Key Phrases To Know
Knowing a few key Vietnamese phrases related to gluten allergies or celiac disease can be very helpful when dining out in Vietnam.
Gluten Free Phrases you can learn in Vietnamese

Pickles Eatery
Pickles Eatery is an outstanding date spot located in Binh Thanh District HCMC. The first time I went, the service was personal, and the atmosphere reminded me of one of those quaint hidden spots you find on a romantic holiday getaway. For me, the Chilli Con Carne is always a favourite, and the Pickles Eatery was no exception. A smaller, more affordable gluten-free dish on the menu filled with rich flavours of tomato, beef and beans.
Sometimes, restaurants provide a token GF option, almost as a paltry gesture of goodwill towards gluten-sensitive individuals. This is where Pickles Eatery makes itself an exception with an extensive list of GF options on offer.
Pickles Eatery’s gluten-free recommendations:
Abalone Pancetta
Tuna tataki
Pork jowl (served without the mashed potato)
Grilled Eel
Chili Con Carne

Beetroot and goat cheese
Ribeye steak
Seabass

Union Jacks
There are few places in HCMC (or the world even) where I have expected to find GF options at a British Fish & Chips shop. Union Jack’s steps in to represent British food in Vietnam, the likes of which I have never seen anywhere outside Britain. If you are craving something filling and delicious, their menu combines some of my favourite traditional British dishes. Every GF dish I have had so far has been delicious, authentic and induced nostalgia for the British Isles. Their GF cottage pie was just like my nan’s back home in England; savoury, rich and flavourful. The last time I was in Union Jack’s, they had a musician playing back-to-back British classics, and, to me, it felt like British Summertime had arrived here in Saigon.
Union Jack’s gluten-free recommendations:
Homemade Cottage Pe
Jack’s Fisherman Pie
Cauliflower & Cheese
Jack’s vegetable Curry with Chips
Jack’s Garden Salad with Balsamic Vinegar
Homemade GF Triple Cooked Chips
