Our take
There are some places in Saigon that just become part of your routine. Mekong Merchant is one of those places for me.
I’ve been in Saigon for around 10 years, and I’ve been coming here pretty much the whole time. It’s one of my staples in Thao Dien and somewhere I know I can always rely on.
The courtyard is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed, and Jay, the Australian GM, is one of those guys who genuinely makes you feel looked after.
They’ve also got a great happy hour, including two of my favourite Belgian beers, Vedett White and La Chouffe.
The brunch is excellent, but Sunday is when Mekong Merchant really comes alive. The Sunday dinner brings together a proper community crowd, with great food and their new French chef, Chef Vincent, in the kitchen.
Whether you’re meeting someone for work, catching up with friends, taking a date, or just looking for somewhere to spend a lazy Sunday, it ticks a lot of boxes.
My score: 9/10. A Thao Dien staple, good people, great food and a courtyard you’ll want to come back to.
This is exactly what Saigon Scene is about: finding the places that become part of your life in Saigon.

About Mekong Merchant
A Thao Dien classic hiding in a leafy courtyard There are places in Saigon that feel like they’ve been here forever — and Mekong Merchant is one of them. Since 2004, this tucked-away spot in Thao Dien has been serving up good food, drinks and laid-back hospitality from its peaceful courtyard. It’s the kind of place you can drop into first thing for breakfast, settle in for lunch, come back for dinner, or meet friends for a few drinks as the evening gets going.

The food is centred around Mediterranean cuisine with Asian flavours, with breakfast, lunch and dinner menus covering everything from homemade-style dishes to pizzas, seafood, salads and plenty of options for sharing. There’s also a strong drinks offering, with wine, beer and cocktails available from the bar.
But honestly, part of the appeal is simply the setting. The restaurant wraps around a shaded, open-air courtyard, giving it a relaxed garden feel that works just as well for a lazy brunch as it does for dinner with friends. There’s even a dedicated wine bar and private space for smaller gatherings.
🍷 Happy Hour
