Rise and Dine: The Best Brunch and Breakfast in Thao Dien!

The short answer

For an early breakfast with a member discount, go to Roast & Smoke on Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, which opens at 7am and has an open-air space where dogs are welcome. For big Australian-style plates, book WKND on Tống Hữu Định, especially at weekends. With kids, The Snap Cafe has the best playground in the neighbourhood. Eleven places worth getting up for are below, plus a few more for the bakery crowd.

Thảo Điền probably has more brunch per square metre than anywhere else in Saigon. Most of it sits on or just off Thảo Điền Street, so on a good morning you can walk between them. This guide covers only Thảo Điền. If you’re coming from District 1 or want the city-wide picture, our best brunch in Ho Chi Minh City guide covers the rest. Five of the places below give Saigon Scene members a discount.

A note on addresses: since district-level administration was abolished on 1 July 2025, Thảo Điền sits in An Khánh Ward. Maps and delivery apps now use that name, but everyone still says “Thảo Điền” or “District 2”.

Weekday or weekend: when to go where

Brunch in Thảo Điền is two different sports. On a weekday you can walk in almost anywhere. The laptop crowd takes the tables at BARTELS, Bagel Brothers and Green Box, and the early risers are at Bagel Brothers or Roast & Smoke before 7:30am. At weekends, WKND, Eddie’s and BARTELS fill up by mid-morning, so book WKND or arrive before 9am.

Check the day before you set off:

  • Mondays: MAD Wine Bar doesn’t serve food until 11:30am.
  • Wednesdays: Union Jack’s is closed.
  • Sundays: Bagel Brothers is closed. The Deck’s seafood brunch is weekends only, and on Sundays it runs into a DJ session.

1. Roast & Smoke

Smoked brisket, ribs and sausage at Roast & Smoke in Thảo Điền

188BE14 Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · Sun–Thu 7am–10pm, Fri–Sat 7am–11pm

A smokehouse that opens at 7am is a rare and beautiful thing. The meat is cooked low and slow (12-hour brisket, ribs, pulled pork), and the bacon is cured and smoked in-house, which is what you want to hear before breakfast. The coffee is roasted in-house too. The space is open-air and pet-friendly, so it’s the easiest brunch in Thảo Điền to bring the dog to.

The breakfast bun, stacked with eggs and the house bacon, is the order. If you’re feeling braver, there’s a brisket phở. It’s further up Nguyễn Văn Hưởng than the Thảo Điền Street cafés, so it’s easier by Grab than on foot. We couldn’t confirm current prices, so check the menu when you arrive. Chico’s Pizza Bar shares the site, which is covered in our best pizza in Saigon guide.

Order this: the breakfast bun, a coffee from their own roast, and a bowl of water for the dog.

2. Eddie’s New York Deli & Diner

71 Thảo Điền, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 8am–10pm

Eddie’s is a 1950s-style American diner that serves breakfast all day, which is the correct policy. It has everything an American breakfast menu should: pancakes, thick-cut French toast, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, skillets, four-egg omelettes and steak and eggs. The cinnamon buns are baked in-house.

It’s one of the better-value brunches in Thảo Điền. The All Day Breakfast plate is 99,000₫, pancakes are 99,000–129,000₫, Benedicts 179,000–199,000₫, and steak and eggs 199,000₫. There’s a kids’ menu and a lot of booth seating, so it copes with families and groups who didn’t book. It’s busiest on weekend mornings.

Order this: pancakes and a milkshake, or the Breakfast & Brunch Special (179,000₫) if you want a bit of everything.

3. Green Box

Green Box, a healthy brunch spot on Lê Văn Miến in Thảo Điền

6 Lê Văn Miến, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 8am–9pm

The healthy option, and the good kind of healthy. Green Box has been on Lê Văn Miến since 2019. It sources produce locally, and its menu wanders happily between the Middle East, Korea and Mexico. It shares the space with SOMA, the café side of the operation, so the coffee and smoothie bowls are taken as seriously as the food. The room is big and bright, with indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s a calm place to work through a weekday morning.

Grain bowls are the core of the menu, from about 190,000₫ for a quinoa bowl with a poached egg to 240,000₫ for miso salmon. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are marked throughout. Bagel Brothers is a few doors up the same street, in case someone in your group wants carbs, not virtue.

Order this: the miso salmon bowl, and a smoothie bowl if you’re pretending it’s a detox.

4. Union Jack’s Fish & Chips

Union Jack's Fish & Chips in Thảo Điền

10 Nguyễn Bá Lân, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · 9am–10pm (last orders 9:30pm), closed Wednesdays

Union Jack’s is best known for its fish and chips, but it opens at 9am and does a British breakfast worth knowing about. Reviewers single out the black pudding, which is not a sentence you read about many places in Saigon. After a long Saturday night, it’s exactly the right amount of grease.

The breakfast rolls are the thing. There’s an English breakfast roll with banger sausages, back bacon and caramelised onion, a double bacon roll on homemade bread, and a Scotsman roll, from about 144,000₫. Ask for the house-made Branston pickle.

Order this: the English breakfast roll, with Branston on the side.

5. WKND

27 Tống Hữu Định, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 7:30am–10pm, kitchen until 9pm

The brunch everyone in Thảo Điền seems to be queuing for, with a 4.8 rating from more than 2,600 Google reviews. WKND takes its cue from Australian all-day café culture: big plates, confident seasoning and good coffee. It calls itself both kid- and pet-friendly, has a kids’ menu, and offers air-conditioned indoor seating plus a shaded outdoor area. The bar seats facing the open kitchen are the best in the house.

Expect 250,000–500,000₫ a head. Regulars order the breakfast ragu, the Smoked Salmon Rosti and the Brekky Sandwich, and the WKND Brunch Board is the one to share. On weekdays you’ll usually walk in. At weekends, book on 0909 722 627 or arrive before 9am.

Order this: the breakfast ragu, and the Brunch Board if there are more than two of you.

6. Mekong Merchant

23 Thảo Điền, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 7am–11pm; breakfast, lunch and dinner menus; happy hour 4–7pm

Mekong Merchant opened in 2004, which makes it the elder statesman of Thảo Điền brunch. The draw is the setting: a hidden courtyard of thatched-roof buildings under string-lit trees, calm even when Thảo Điền Street is not. The menu is Mediterranean with Asian touches, and the kitchen is known for fresh Phú Quốc seafood.

It isn’t the cheapest brunch on the street: eggs Benedict with smoked salmon is about 376,000₫, and Moroccan baked eggs in a claypot about 280,000₫. You’re partly paying for the courtyard, and on a slow Sunday it’s worth it. Book at weekends.

Order this: eggs Benedict in the courtyard, and take your time over it.

7. BARTELS

11B Thảo Điền, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 7am–7pm

BARTELS started in Bangkok, and its Thảo Điền outpost does what it does there: sourdough baked in-house, proper sandwiches, good coffee and cold-pressed juice. The room is bright and full of plants. It’s also small, so on weekend mornings it gets properly packed. Come on a weekday if you want a table for longer than a sandwich. There’s a corner with toys, which buys parents about fifteen minutes.

Most plates are 160,000–245,000₫. Turkish eggs with crispy chilli oil are 185,000₫, smashed avocado 230,000₫, and the Reuben’s Cousin 245,000₫. The grilled Cubano with house-pickled jalapeños is the sandwich people come back for. You can take a sourdough loaf home.

Order this: Turkish eggs if it’s breakfast, the Cubano if it’s nearly lunch.

8. The Snap Cafe

32 Trần Ngọc Diện, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 7:30am–10pm (last orders 9:30pm)

The Snap Cafe has been the answer to “where can we eat with the kids?” since 2008. The garden has a playground with a climbing frame, a sandpit and a slide, all within sight of the tables, which means parents can finish a coffee while it’s still hot. It also describes itself as dog-friendly, so the whole household can come.

Breakfast is served all day. The Full Monty is about 348,000₫, there’s a breakfast burrito and a morning phở, and kids’ dishes run about 66,000–180,000₫. The food is solid rather than thrilling, but that’s not really what you’re here for. Weekend mornings fill up by about 9am.

Order this: the Full Monty for you, anything from the kids’ menu for them, and a second coffee while they’re in the sandpit.

9. Bagel Brothers

23b Lê Văn Miến, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · Mon–Fri 6:30am–8pm, Sat 6:30am–6pm, closed Sundays
Also at 97a Phạm Ngũ Lão, Bến Thành Ward (District 1), same hours

Two brothers who couldn’t find a decent bagel in Saigon started making their own, on the principle that “if it’s not boiled, it’s not a bagel”. Opening at 6:30am makes it the earliest proper breakfast in this guide, and by 7:30 the regulars are already in. It shares its space with Ngon Cheesecake and has a gaming area.

The bacon and egg bagel starts at 130,000₫, smoked salmon with cream cheese at 180,000₫, and avocado, cheese and egg at 105,000₫. A Vietnamese iced coffee is 40,000₫. Gluten-free bagels are available.

Order this: a bacon and egg bagel on an everything bagel, and a cinnamon roll for later.

10. Marcel

19A Ngô Quang Huy, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · daily 9am–10pm

The former Café Marcel moved from District 1 and now trades as Marcel Thao Dien, on a quieter street off Xuân Thủy. It’s a French-leaning all-day spot, part café, part brunch restaurant, part burger joint, in a bright room with floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor seating. It’s one of the more polished brunch rooms in the area.

Brunch plates run from about 183,600₫ for Le Smash to 232,200₫ for The Smoky. Le Signature (194,400₫) and the Salmon Muffin (205,000₫) are the reliable choices. It opens at 9am, so it’s for a late start, not an early one.

Order this: Le Signature, and a coffee while you wait for the table by the window.

11. The Deck Saigon

38 Nguyễn Ư Dĩ, An Khánh Ward (Thảo Điền) · restaurant daily from 8am; seafood brunch Saturdays and Sundays

The most “occasion” brunch in Thảo Điền. The Deck sits right on the Saigon River, and its weekend seafood brunch is built around the oyster bar, with $1 oysters at weekends. On Sundays, happy hour starts at noon and a DJ plays from 4 to 9pm, so a brunch here can easily become the whole day.

We couldn’t find a published brunch price, so ask when you book (through the website). It’s down by the river, so take a Grab in the midday heat.

Order this: a dozen oysters and a glass of something cold, then decide whether you’re staying for the DJ.

Also worth a look

  • Saigon Bagel, 38 Nguyễn Cừ: hand-rolled New York-style bagels from 6:30am (Mondays until 5pm, other days until 8:30pm). The Baklava Bagel (about 88,000₫) is dessert pretending to be breakfast; loaded pastrami or smoked salmon bagels run about 280,000–308,000₫.
  • Bakes Thao Dien, 16 Thảo Điền: French-style bakery café, daily 7:30am–10:30pm. Croissants from 50,000₫ and a black truffle cheese croissant at 85,000₫.
  • The Loop, 49 Thảo Điền: casual community bistro doing Mediterranean breakfasts and all-day brunch, daily 7:30am–8:30pm. Vegan overnight oats are 139,000₫, and there’s a kids’ menu.
  • Quán Bụi Garden, 55A Ngô Quang Huy: a Vietnamese option in a garden setting, daily 7am–11pm, for when someone in the group wants bún chả, not Benedict. For more local mornings, see the best Vietnamese breakfasts in Saigon.
  • Kashew Cheese Deli, 14 Trần Ngọc Diện: a vegan deli with cashew cheeses, from 9am daily.
  • MAD Wine Bar & Eatery, 63 Xuân Thủy: from our earlier guide. It opens at 8am for coffee, with food from 9am Tuesday to Sunday (11:30am on Mondays). We couldn’t confirm its current breakfast menu, so it’s really a wine bar that happens to be up early.
  • Tartine Saigon, 70 Đường số 66, and SOKO Cake Bake & Brunch, 25B Ngô Quang Huy and 92 Xuân Thủy: Thảo Điền branches of the bakery-brunch names covered in our city-wide brunch guide.

Closed or changed, so don’t bother

  • L’Usine Thảo Điền (24 Thảo Điền) has closed. L’Usine carries on in District 1 and Phú Mỹ Hưng.
  • The Vintage Emporium Thảo Điền has closed. The Đa Kao original is still open.
  • LuBu, the Mediterranean restaurant from our earlier guide, has closed.
  • Mamacita has gone. Its site at 80 Xuân Thủy is now La Lola Thảo Điền, a restaurant rather than a brunch spot.

Where to go for what

  • Kids in tow: The Snap Cafe for the playground; WKND or Eddie’s for a kids’ menu; BARTELS for the toy corner.
  • The dog is coming too: Roast & Smoke, The Snap Cafe or WKND. More in our dog-friendly cafés guide.
  • Breakfast before 7am: Bagel Brothers or Saigon Bagel (6:30am), then Roast & Smoke and Mekong Merchant at 7am.
  • Breakfast at 7pm: Eddie’s, where it’s served all day.
  • A hangover: Union Jack’s breakfast roll or Roast & Smoke’s bacon bun. More ideas in our hangover cure guide.
  • Brunch that turns into drinks: The Deck on a Sunday.
  • Healthy, honestly: Green Box.
  • A laptop and a long coffee: Green Box or BARTELS on a weekday. See also the best cafés to work from.
  • A courtyard and no rush: Mekong Merchant.
  • On a budget: Eddie’s All Day Breakfast at 99,000₫ or a bagel at Bagel Brothers.

A walking brunch crawl

Thảo Điền is small, but pavements come and go and the shade disappears by late morning, so start early. Three clusters make a good plan:

  • Thảo Điền Street: BARTELS (11B), Bakes (16), Mekong Merchant (23), The Loop (49) and Eddie’s (71) are all on the same street.
  • Lê Văn Miến: Green Box (6) and Bagel Brothers (23b) are a few doors apart, just off Thảo Điền Street.
  • Trần Ngọc Diện and Tống Hữu Định: The Snap Cafe (32) and Kashew (14) share a street, and WKND (27 Tống Hữu Định) is nearby.

Roast & Smoke, up Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, and The Deck, down by the river, are better reached by Grab.

More places to start the day: the best brunch in Ho Chi Minh City, the best Vietnamese breakfasts in Saigon and, for Sundays that start late, Sunday roasts in Saigon.

How we picked

Every venue on this list was checked in September 2026: its address and opening hours against its Google Maps listing and its own website or social channels, and its prices against current menus and recent reviews. Places that have closed or stopped serving brunch were removed, even if they were in our earlier guide. Prices are a starting point, not a promise.

Roast & Smoke, Eddie’s, Green Box and Union Jack’s are Saigon Scene partners. That’s why they lead the list and why members save there. A place only makes the list if the brunch earns it, and the order of the other entries is our own view.
